Mr.Nak-type

We presented a show, because that’s how Jim wanted it! And we all know he usually got what he wanted.

“Celebrating Mr. Nak” was held March 29 on the James Nakamoto Stage in McKinley High School’s auditorium. And we hope, as Mr. Nak did, that the event can be the catalyst for a fund to regenerate a theater program at the school, perhaps rekindle McKinley Theatre Group.

The committee that planned the event will continue discussions about ways Mr. Nak’s legacy can continue. Watch this space for more news on that. And we can still be reached by email: celebration4jnakamoto@gmail.com. One of the committee members will make sure you’re in the loop.

  1. I will be coming from Tokyo to the celebration. How can I help from a far? I will be flying into Maui first on March 23. I can go to Honolulu on the 28th or even earlier if I can be useful.

  2. It’s tough missing this event, but I must due to my health. 16 years ago we re-dedicated the McKinley Auditorium, and it was great working with all of the MTG alumni from the various years. This event promises to be even greater I’m sure. I’m wishing everyone my Aloha.

    • You will be with us Billy, we will feel your presence. I just turned 59 years old on Thursday, and I too am having some issues with my health…Frustrating because my mind thinks young but my body says ” uh oh “. It was fun and magical and a wonderful experience working with you and Mr.Nakamoto back then in ” Just Once in a Lifetime ” You worked so hard and did a great job as our musical director and love your voice too !!! Take care my dear friend, and please say HELLO to Fay for me 😀 Oh…I just remembered, we were also neighbors at 1255 Nuuanu Ave…remember?

  3. Not sure which spots (Website or Facebook) is the right place to say that we are coming but we are! Mary Pendelton (Warren) class of ’71 and Arlene McBride (Shimabukuro) class of ’72. We will be arriving March 23 and have volunteered for whatever you need.

  4. I will arrive the 26th, still know my way around a light board or will help out backstage if needed. L. Joaquin Gowens MTG Class of 69

  5. I did not graduate from McKinley, but my mom (Fely Serra) was a colleague and close friend of Mr. Nak’s for many years. I grew up attending MTG productions and I would be honored to be a part of this Celebration as a member of the band.

  6. My husband and I are coming in from Chicago. I wouldn’t miss this for the world! I’m an MHS ’77 grad, MTG ’76-77′. I started the committee for MTG Social Gatherings. There is a File entitled “Mainland & Outer-Island MTG Alumni Itinerary” on the MTG Facebook Closed Group. If you are coming in for this celebration, please add your info there. We are planning social outings for anyone who wants to attend. More info to come. Check MTG’s FB. Can’t wait to see everyone again! Mahalo! 00/
